The battle for the 2024 British GT Championship reaches critical point as the series makes its second and final visit of the season to Donington Park on 7/8 September. The prestigious championship will see supercars from a range of marques battle it out around the iconic GP circuit.
On-track action is headlined by Sunday’s two-hour British GT contest that will see McLarens, Aston Martins, Lamborghinis and more contend with pitstops, refuelling and driver changes in both the GT3 and GT4 classes.
The championship battles are incredibly tight, with the leading trio of GT3 contenders split by just 25 points coming into the penultimate round of the season.
The two Barwell Motorsport Lamborghini Huracan GT3s of Rob Collard/Ricky Collard and Alex Martin/Sandy Mitchell have been the benchmark this year, with those pairings separated by just five points at the top of the standings. The Garage 59 McLaren 720S of Adam Smalley and Shaun Balfe remains within touching distance, 16 points further back in third. Barwell Motorsport also has the chance to wrap up the GT3 Teams Championship title in the East Midlands.
In GT4, the fight for championship honours is equally close, with Jack Brown and Zac Meakin’s Optimum Motorsport McLaren Artura leading Mikey Porter and Jamie Day’s Forsetti Motorsport Aston Martin by just two and a half points.
With only Donington Park and the finale at Brands Hatch remaining in the 2024 season, there’s no room for error, and the final results this weekend will heavily impact on who achieves championship glory.
Junior series contests intensify
A thrilling title battle continues to rage in the GB3 Championship partnered by the BRDC, with New Zealand’s Louis Sharp leading the way from British driver John Bennett by just four points. Poland’s Tymek Kucharczyk is also in the fight, 13 points behind Sharp, having achieved the highest number of race wins with four victories this season.
The GB4 Championship standings are close too, with Sweden’s Linus Granfors leading Britain’s Harry Burgoyne by 15 points. Alisha Palmowski remains in the mix, with the Derbyshire teenager 31 points back from Granfors.
The champions from both series will receive major boosts to their single-seater careers, with GB3 graduates often progressing into FIA Formula 3, Formula 2 and beyond.
Drivers from across both championships have been recently shortlisted for this year’s running of the Silverstone Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award, with GB3 front-runners Sharp, Bennett and Will Macintyre all named alongside young GB4 star Palmowski.
Further track action comes from the Ginetta Junior Championship, Ginetta GT Academy and Ginetta GT Championship. Expect close racing and hard-fought battles across the grids.
Off-track, a busy trade area will be in operation all weekend, with several dealers and manufacturers represented. A free pit walk and autograph session also features, allowing fans to get up close to the drivers and machines during the main Sunday raceday.
Tickets for the British GT Championship at Donington Park are still available at discounted advance rates until 4pm on Thursday 5 September. Main raceday (Sunday) admission is priced at £25 for adults, with discounted rates for teenagers aged 13-15, and free entry for children under-13 all weekend.
