Matthew Wrigley drove to a sublime double victory in the Masters Racing Legends series at Brands Hatch today (Sunday). The Tyrrell 011driver continued his emphatic Saturday qualifying form at the Masters Historic Festival to complete a clean sweep on the Grand Prix circuit.
Wrigley started the opening race of the day from pole position and duly controlled proceedings from the front, despite Japanese Williams pilot Yutaka Toriba keeping him honest from second. The Tyrrell was never headed however, ending the 15-lap race around the Kent circuit’s longer layout just shy of a second clear of his rival.
Simon Fish completed the rostrum in the opening race after a strong run to third, albeit more than 20 seconds adrift of those ahead. Fish was forced to keep an eye in his mirrors during the closing stages as the charging McLaren MP4/1 of Steve Hartley came through the back, but the latter was forced to settle for fourth as the chequered flag fell. Mark Harrison’s Shadow DN9 rounded out the top-five.
The second race started with Hartley on pole position alongside Fish, with the top four flipped from the earlier result. This resulted in a tense opening few laps whilst those who’d been quicker earlier on looked for an opportunity to pass.
That watchful opening phase of the race came to a dramatic end when Hartley’s McLaren emerged from the woodland Grand Prix section of the lap facing the wrong way following contact with Toriba. With Hartley’s race ending in the gravel trap, and Toriba forced to withdraw with damage, the safety car emerged with Wrigley once again at the head of the pack.
Once the Tyrrell was at the front, there was no stopping Wrigley who surged clear when the race got back up to racing speed. Behind him, Fish held on to second to take a second podium of the weekend whilst Harrison improved on his earlier fifth place with third. Warren Briggs and Peter Williams completed the top-five.
