Ryan Smith dominated the final weekend of the British Truck Racing Championship (BTRC) at Brands Hatch, taking five wins out of five while securing his ninth BTRC championship.
Saturday’s brace of races marked the beginning of the Smith show on the Indy circuit, with the Worldwide Truck Racing driver securing victory in race one with a lights-to-flag win behind the wheel of his Daimler Truck. His first win of the weekend was enough to crown him the 2024 British Truck Racing Champion, an incredible ninth straight championship for the Mansfield racer.
Race two was a similar story, with Smith converting pole position into another victory, finishing over 12 seconds ahead of David Jenkins in second. Sunday’s races would prove to be far less smooth sailing for Smith, as he started from tenth for race three. Adam Bint started on pole from Neil Yates and local racer Steven Powell; however, it wouldn’t take long for Smith to begin cutting through the field. Michael Oliver took the lead of the race early on, but a valiant defensive display from Oliver wasn’t enough to prevent Smith from finding an overtake, securing his third straight win of the weekend.
Smith’s most remarkable win of the weekend came in race four, with the race beginning in disaster with Neil Yates running wide onto the grass on the exit of Surtees and colliding with Smith, beaching the pair in the gravel. The subsequent red flag allowed for both trucks to be recovered, and remarkably, both made the restart from the pitlane. Smith then began cutting through the field with ease before taking first place from Steven Powell on the inside of Clearways to complete an incredible comeback.
The final race of the season delivered another classic Smith performance as he charged from eighth on the grid to take the lead from Tom O’Rourke with a textbook move up the inside of Druids. Smith cruised home to win his fifth race of the weekend, finishing his season and the Brands Hatch 2024 race calendar in style.
