VRD Racing's Nikita Bedrin stormed to victory with a sensational last lap pass in the second race of the weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Having clinched the title yesterday, Bedrin had fought his way up from sixth on the grid to fourth early on, before dispatching GB4 runner-up Fred Green after a safety car restart. Abbi Pulling, who ran second for most of the race, was next and Bedrin surged past at turn one on lap 12, and then set about closing down the gap to long time race leader Lewis Wherrell, which had grown to over a second.
Bedrin began taking big chunks out of the JHR driver's advantage and started the final lap just a few tenths behind the debutant. He followed him closely through the first two sectors and got a good run down the straight to turn 10. The pair were side by side exiting the corner and Bedrin made a sensational move stick around the outside of the following right hander, just three corners from home.
That secured the second win of his crowning weekend, his eighth triumph of the season.
Having led all but the final few corners, Wherrell had to settle for second place, still a remarkable achievement on his debut weekend, while Pulling earned her fourth podium of the season with third. Pulling had made a great start to go second from third on the grid, and had challenged pole sitter Wherrell for the lead on the run to turn one.
Behind the podium trio came Green, who secured his best result yet on his first GB3 weekend, and four tenths of a second clear of Xcel Motorsport's Lucas Fluxa, who strengthened his grip on second place in the championship standings.
Rodin's Martin Molnar closed the gap to third place in the standings to just two points with a drive to sixth ahead of Hillspeed's Peter Bouzinelos, with Thomas Ingram Hill impressing again on his GB3 debut weekend with another top-10 finish.
Patricio Gonzalez (VRD) and Deagen Fairclough (Hitech) completed the top-10, with Fairclough needing to salvage a strong result in the final race this weekend to claim third place in the championship standings.
The final race of the season is due to commence at 14.50 local time.
