Donington's Convoy in the Park concluded in fine style today (Sunday), courtesy of three headline races from the British Truck Racing Championship.
David Jenkins fought his way from fourth on the grid to the victory in the first race of the day, eventually overcoming long-time leader Richard Collett's similar MAN TGX12000 before striding off into the distance, finishing nearly five seconds clear of John Newell's MAN and Stuart Oliver's Volvo VNL 13000 having also fought past Collett late on.
A big lap one accident for Oliver at the start of the second race forced a lengthy delay, but once the race resumed it was another thriller as his son Michael restored family pride with victory after a tense final few laps and a drag to the line, just a quarter of a second ahead of the Daimler of reigning champion Ryan Smith and Craig Reid's Iveco Stralis.
Reid looked on course to win won the final contest of the day and make it five different winners from the quintet of races this weekend, but a mid-race off at the Old Hairpin handed the lead to Michael Oliver. Smith though had other ideas and fought his way past with a couple of minutes remaining after several moments of contact. The champion finished a couple of seconds clear while Oliver fended off Jenkins, who claimed the final podium spot.
As well as the superb truck racing, further action from Junior Saloons, Legends, Pickups, the CNC Heads Sports and Saloons plus the Praga Cup meant there was all sorts of variety on track, while off it, families were thoroughly entertained again with hundreds of show trucks around the venue, the busy live action arena where two caravans met their maker, plus loads more entertainment areas around the circuit.
